For as long as I can remember I’ve loved to garden and decorate.
Looking back at all the homes and landscapes I’ve helped develop for friends, family and myself, it’s surprising that I did not dive into this business more formally years ago.
As an English major graduate from the University of Illinois, I’ve fueled my creativity in writing careers both in Corporate Communications and freelance writing. Most recently as a director for Beautycounter, a skincare and makeup company set out to fight for safer legislation in the cosmetics industry, I’ve spent almost 4 years learning the needs and wants of my clients to provide superior service and product selection. My husband has been my toughest and most opinionated client during our 18 years and 4 homes together, but that has been a wonderful lesson in how to navigate the relationship between a designer and client. Our most recent home was a complete gut remodel, which we tackled ourselves from start to finish. It was a labor of love — literally. We personally ripped out almost every floor, ceiling, wall, stud and piece of insulation, designed the room layouts, picked every finish, floor, tile, countertop, paint color, installed trim, backsplashes, you name it, we did it. And once that was complete, I tackled the outside, including an almost entire new front landscape and a major overhaul in the backyard. And now we are finally in our forever dream home.
Home decorating/improvement stores and garden centers have been my playground. And as our children have grown and no longer need me at home, my passion for interior and landscape design have fueled my passion to help others create a home that both functions for their family and provides endless style. A place they love to come home to and share with the people they love most.
And so, Beauty by Design was born.
